Is Your Body Trying to Tell You Something? 4 Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

It’s easy to brush off symptoms and tell ourselves we’re just tired, stressed, or getting older. But sometimes the body is trying to send a clear signal that something needs attention. Chest pain, sudden headaches, unexplained fatigue, weight loss, or changes in your skin or vision are not things to simply wait and see about.

At Redbank Medical Centre, our GPs are here to listen, whether it’s a routine check-up or new health concern. Below are some of the key warning signs worth taking seriously, and why they matter.

Chest Pain

Why it matters: Chest pain can be a sign of a heart attack, angina, or another cardiac event, and it should never be ignored, even if it seems mild or comes and goes.

These symptoms can include:

  • Pressure or heaviness in the chest
  • Pain spreading to the jaw, neck, shoulder, or arm
  • Shortness of breath with chest discomfort
  • Cold sweat for no clear reason

If you have chest pain that is severe, getting worse, or lasts 10 minutes or more, call Triple Zero (000) and ask for an ambulance. For other chest pain, seek medical assessment promptly rather than waiting for it to pass.

Sudden Headache

Why it matters: Most headaches are harmless, but a sudden, severe one can be a sign of something more serious, such as an aneurysm, meningitis, or stroke.

Warning signs can include:

  • A sudden, intense headache with no clear cause
  • Headache accompanied by a stiff neck or fever
  • Headache with vision changes or sensitivity to light
  • Vomiting and confusion
  • Headache following a head injury

If you have a sudden, severe headache, or a headache accompanied by symptoms such as neck stiffness, fever, confusion, vision changes or vomiting, call Triple Zero (000) and ask for an ambulance. If your headaches are changing, becoming more frequent, or are worrying you, speak with your GP.

Fatigue and Weight Loss

Why it matters: Persistent fatigue and unexplained weight loss are symptoms worth discussing with your GP, particularly when they continue without an obvious explanation.

Things to look out for include:

  • Unexplained weight loss without changes to your diet or lifestyle
  • Feeling exhausted no matter how much rest you get
  • Ongoing loss of appetite
  • Noticing changes in hair

These symptoms can point to a range of underlying conditions, from thyroid issues to nutritional deficiencies. A GP can help identify the cause and put a plan in place to address it.

Skin and Vision Changes

Why it matters: Changes to your skin or vision can sometimes be signs of an underlying health concern. Some skin changes, such as a changing mole or a sore that won’t heal, may require assessment for skin cancer, while new or sudden vision changes may need prompt medical attention.

Changes worth discussing with your GP include:

  • A mole that has changed in size, shape, or colour
  • A sore or spot that won’t heal
  • Sudden blurry or double vision
  • Flashes of light or new floaters may require medical attention

Early assessment can be important when you notice new or changing symptoms. If you notice anything unusual, don’t wait for your next routine check-up; book an appointment sooner.
